Chicago Bankruptcy Attorney discusses – How To Stop Harassing Phone Calls?

Calls from debt collectors can be extremely distressing and although Chapter 7 and 13 filings can put an end to collection attempts, there are also other types of unwanted calls that you may be receiving: unsolicited telemarketers.

The Do Not Call Registry (DNC) from the Federal Trade Commission is a central database that limits the types of telemarketing calls you can receive. Once a phone number is registered, telemarketing agencies have up to 31 days to stop calling you. If they fail to comply, offending companies can face hefty fines for each offense.

It is important to note that phone number registration in the DNC may not stop all calls altogether. Phone calls from political organizations, charitable entities, surveyors and businesses that have had a prior relationship with you are exempt from the Do Not Call guidelines.

How To Register

You can register your cell or land line number online at https://www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236). If you register by phone, you must call from the phone number you wish to register. Once registered, your telephone number remains on the DNC Registry, without expiration, unless the phone number is permanently disconnected.
